Visas & Residency

Dubai Investor Visa Requirements

Residency through owning or partnering in a UAE company. The most common route for founders who have just formed a company and now need to live here.

If you own a UAE company, the company can sponsor your residency. This is the ordinary route for founders, and it usually follows immediately after the trade licence is issued.

How it works

Company first, then residency.

1

Licence and establishment card

The company must exist and its immigration file must be open. Nothing can be applied for before this.

2

Entry permit

Issued against the company, or a status change if you are already in the UAE.

3

Medical and Emirates ID

Both in person. We book them together.

4

Stamping

Residency issued and linked to the passport and Emirates ID.

5

Family

Once your own residency is issued, you can sponsor spouse and children, subject to the conditions in force.

Points that catch people out

Small things, real consequences.

  • The shareholding on the licence must match the person applying. A nominee arrangement will not support a visa.
  • The office registered under Ejari affects how many visas the company can sponsor, including yours.
  • If you already hold a UAE residency through an employer, it must be cancelled before the new one can be issued.
  • A visit visa cannot simply be extended into residency – it is a status change, and it has a window.

Questions

Asked about investor visas.

The requirement depends on the jurisdiction and the licence type rather than being a single national figure, and it is set by the authorities. We confirm what applies to your structure before you commit.

Yes, subject to the zone’s visa allocation for your package. An offshore company carries no visa entitlement at all. Why offshore does not.

Once the licence and establishment card are in place, the residency sequence itself is not long. The medical and Emirates ID appointments usually set the pace.

Owner, partner or manager

Three routes, and they are not the same.

The residency follows the role you actually hold on the licence.

A sole owner is sponsored by their own company. A partner holds a recorded share and is sponsored on that basis, which is why the shareholding on the memorandum matters to immigration and not only to the shareholders. A manager named on the licence may be sponsored in that capacity without holding shares at all.

The route affects what evidence is required and, in some structures, how many residencies the company can support. Where several shareholders each want residency, the allocation has to be planned against the premises rather than assumed. How premises set capacity.

  • The person applying must appear on the licence in the capacity they are applying under
  • A nominee holding shares on someone else’s behalf will not support that person’s residency
  • Adding a shareholder later is a licence amendment before it is a visa application
  • A manager’s residency generally depends on their remaining the named manager

Renewal and staying valid

What keeps the residency alive.

Investor residency depends on a company that is itself still valid.

  • The licence must be current. A lapsed trade licence puts the residency that depends on it at risk. Hold the date
  • Ejari must be current. It supports the licence, which supports the visa
  • Medical insurance must be maintained, for you and for each dependant
  • Long absences matter. A residency can lapse if the holder stays outside the UAE for an extended continuous period – ask before a long trip, not after
  • The Emirates ID has its own expiry, which is not always the same date as the visa

Clients on retainer have every one of these dates held alongside the company’s. It is the same calendar; there is no reason for it to live in two places.

If you exit the company

Selling, closing, or stepping back.

The residency exists because of your position in the company. If you sell your shares, resign as manager or close the business, the basis for it ends – and it does not end quietly at some future date, it ends as part of the transaction.

That is manageable when it is planned. The usual answer is to have the next route in place before the current one closes: another company, an employer, or a spouse’s sponsorship. What causes trouble is discovering the connection after the sale has completed.

  • Another company you own, if you are continuing in business here
  • Employment residency, if you are joining someone else. What that involves
  • Family sponsorship, where a spouse holds residency in their own right. Conditions
  • A long-term category, if your circumstances support one. Assessed honestly

More than one owner

Who can hold residency through the company.

Partners are not automatically equal here, and the answer depends on the structure rather than on the agreement between you.

Where a company has several shareholders, the question of who can take residency through it is decided by the licensing authority and the immigration file, not by how the founders have divided things between themselves.

Some authorities allow each qualifying shareholder to hold residency through the company. Others tie it to a named role on the licence, or to a shareholding position. The rule varies by jurisdiction and by zone, and it changes, so we confirm it against your licence rather than quoting a general position that may not apply to you.

What settles it in practice

  • Which authority issued the licence, since free zones set their own position
  • Whether the shareholder is also named as manager, which is a licence role rather than a courtesy title
  • The premises, because visa capacity is set by the space. How that works
  • Whether a shareholder is a company rather than a person, which changes the route entirely
  • Whether a partner already holds residency another way, which may make this unnecessary

The practical advice is to settle this before the memorandum is signed. Shareholding is one of the few things that is genuinely expensive to change afterwards, and residency is one of the reasons people want to change it. What to fix before signing.

If you are mostly elsewhere

Residency you do not use can lapse.

The visa is a residency, and residency assumes you reside.

Founders frequently set up in Dubai while their life is still somewhere else, intending to spend more time here later. That is an ordinary plan and it usually works. It is worth knowing that a residency can lapse through continuous absence from the country.

The permitted period of absence is set by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, and there are circumstances in which it is treated differently. We do not print a figure here because it is exactly the kind of number that moves, and a stale one is worse than none. We confirm the current rule against your file and, more usefully, tell you what it means for how you actually plan to travel.

What to think about before you rely on it

  • How much time you genuinely expect to spend in the UAE in the first year, honestly rather than optimistically
  • Whether the residency is carrying anything else – a family file, a bank relationship, an Emirates ID you need
  • Whether the company has any local presence if you do not, which affects banking more than immigration
  • What happens to dependants you sponsor if your own residency lapses

If the honest answer is that you will rarely be here, that is worth saying out loud early. There are structures that suit an owner who visits, and being told that before the file is built is cheaper than discovering it afterwards.
